When Should I File?
If you have a medical condition that kept you from working, and is likely to last for 12 months you should file for Social Security Disability. Social Security Disability benefits are paid retroactively for 12 months from the date of application. A delay in filing may reduce your retroactive payment and medical coverage start date. The timing for your application is very important. If you are uncertain about filing, a "protective filing" can be requested. This will allow an additional 6 months to make your decision.
We always recommend that you consult with an experienced attorney before contacting SSA for your disability claim.
